Geo-information services for risk management on a European level
Project Area
Preview

an EC FP6 Integrated Project, aims at developing new geo-information services for atmospheric, geophysical and man-made risk management on a European level.

Started in April 2005 for 45 month, PREVIEW proposes a consistent and harmonised approach for service deployment at a Local, Regional, National and European level.
PREVIEW is jointly developed by a consortium of 58 partners from 15 nations, gathering together a wide range of technical skills from the scientific community, the service operators and the industry with the expertise of main end-users bodies (Civil Protections).

PREVIEW services will be validated under pre-operational conditions in 8 selected test sites throughout all the following phases:

  • preventing the risk,
  • monitoring the situation,
  • assessing the impacts,
  • capitalizing on the experience.

PREVIEW Progress meeting

The last Progess Meeting took place at TELESPAZIO premises in ROMA (IT) on December 5th/6th.Around 55 people attended the two days event. This meeting was scheduled roughly at the middle of the second phase of the project that will end December 2008. It was a good opportunity to provide the EC with a comprehensive status of the project achievements. As per EC recommendations made during the phase 1 review in EXETER, the speakers all put the emphasis on the following topics:

  • delivery of pre-operational services,
  • EU applicability and exportability of the services,
  • users' ownership,
  • integration and transverse activities,
  • implementation of the project approved methodologies (e.g., technical validation, user validation and assessment, European applicability, operational scenarios analysis, connectivity to PREVIEW products),
  • promotion & dissemination actions.

As an unformal conclusion, the EC stated that significant efforts have been perceived to improve the weak points raised during the preceeding review. For instance, the "technical validation", "EU applicability" and "users's ownership" topics (through end users trainings and participation to exercices) have been hailed. There is still room for improvement by the way in the field of integration and commonality between the different platforms.

We would like to thank all the speakers for the dedication in making this event a success. Special thanks to TELESPAZIO for the logisitics. The team spirit shall be sustained during the last period of the project where, among other key deliverables, the consortium will have to organize a "PREVIEW event" which modalities still need to be defined.
