Georgia Spatial Data InfrastructureAt the core of an effective Geographic Information System (GIS) is high quality, up-to-date geographic data. Producing, maintaining, and distributing geographic data that fuels GIS applications are a principal part of the GIS Coordinating Committee (GISCC) mandate. In Georgia, a huge investment has already been made in GIS data development. The State has a responsibility to ensure that these data are used and maintained properly so that organizations can capitalize on this investment. The answer is to put in place standards, procedures for data maintenance, and effective mechanisms for data distribution. This will ensure that the data are widely used and that time and money will not be wasted on duplicate data creation efforts. The Georgia Spatial Data Infrastructure is a program and process designed to help accomplish this.
