Map Collection

The map collection includes worldwide cartographic coverage through more than 250,000 sheet maps, aerial photographs, and satellite images, and over 5,500 atlases and gazetteers. Though the Intermountain West is the area of primary emphasis, there is detailed coverage of the world and solar system. Electronic Databases

Computers in the Science / Maps Reference area provide access to electronic databases that will help patrons find references to specific articles in journals on numerous science topics. Some of the databases can be accessed from home computers, but some of the databases can only be accessed on computers in the Science / Maps Reference area. The full text of articles from some science journals is available in electronic format through Internet web sites. In the Science / Maps Reference area, we also have a number of databases in CD ROM format that can be checked out from the reference desk and used on computers in the reference area specifically set up to search these databases. Librarian Assisted Research Services on topics in the sciences can be scheduled by contacting a subject librarian or by asking at the Science / Maps Reference Desk.

Periodicals

During the summer 1999 term, all of the periodicals (journals and magazines) from every floor of the old library building, including the science periodicals, were moved into the new Periodicals Room. It is located in the new library addition on the North end of level 2. The current issues are on the shelves with the bound volumes. On the left (west) side of the Periodicals Room are the volumes from 1987 to present. On the right (east) side of the Periodicals Room are all of the volumes from 1986 and older; they are on compact shelving which rolls back and forth on the floor. In the BYU Library Catalog, periodicals have a location of "PER". If you need help finding a periodical, please ask for help at the Periodicals reference desk.
